Crocheting a universe on my desk (and straining my eyes)

Everyone loves the deep, cosmic look of this "Starry Night" clock, but only fellow makers know the struggle of working with navy blue yarn. In anything less than perfect light, the stitches just disappear. I basically have to count by feel.

I designed this face in two layers. The light blue gradient center is meant to look like a glowing nebula, while the outer ring is a deep midnight blue.

The real "patience test" was the tiny details:

• The little Saturn with its rings and the tiny Earth? Those are made with a super-fine lace hook.

• The sequins and beads aren't just scattered; I sewed each one on by hand to mimic the density of a real galaxy, hiding all the thread inside the yarn.

• That bright green star at the top? That’s my little touch of "life" in the vast cosmos.

When you hang this on your wall, you’ll notice the texture is so much richer than a printed plastic clock. The weight of the wool paired with the shimmer of the beads gives it a "reach for the stars" vibe that’s hard to capture in photos.
